History And Background
A Mendip Community Transport scheme was originally set up some 20 years ago under the umbrella of Voluntary Action Mendip (VAM). Such activity was continued through to 2002 when VAM no longer existed.

At that time Mendip Community Transport was reformed, and became a not for profit organisation which has Charitable Status. The company is limited by guarantee and has a board of Trustees and no shareholders. It has continued the excellent work which the former business was undertaking and has now grown considerably.

In 2002 the business was operating with 5 mini buses whereas now it has some 20 mini buses in the fleet, all of which are wheelchair accessible.

  Services Currently Provided
With this larger fleet the organisation is able to meet a wide variety of transport needs, undertaking regular work for Somerset County Council in the use of Social Care and Special Needs Education Transport. Similarly on behalf of Somerset County Council the business is now operating a service known as Mendip Slinky using two buses. One bus operates in the Frome area and the other, whilst based in Shepton Mallet, covers the area of Shepton Mallet, Wells, Glastonbury, and Street. This service is provided by two 16 seater wheelchair accessible mini buses and is available to all registered users. (For fuller details please click on our Mendip Slinky page).

A similar service known as Sedgemoor Slinky is also provided, again on behalf of Somerset County Council in the Sedgemoor District Council area and again two vehicles cover the whole of the area. One covers the north of the region, the other covers the south. This service provides transport to all registered users. (For fuller details please click on our Sedgemoor Slinky page).

In addition to the above, the business is able to provide transport to a wide variety of groups, societies, and clubs, normally within the Mendip area, and tends to revolve around the elderly, infirm, or youth groups.

In 2003/2004 it became apparent that regular requests were being made to provide a service for transportation to medical appointments. The business responded to these requests and has now built a Hospital Car Transport scheme operated purely by volunteer drivers. This is available to registered users for the purpose of attending medical and Hospital appointments outside of the Mendip area. A similar scheme was launched in October 2009 in the Cheddar/Axbridge area also.

The Glastonbury Tor Bus is a regulated bus route (No 196) also operated by the business providing a bus link between Glastonbury town centre and the Tor.
